December 2009 Updates

  • Information provided through the monthly training update is intended to inform the Scouting community of the latest training information. Council and district trainers should be encouraged to regularly monitor this site for up-to-date information.
  • Beginning in 2010, National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) will be open to both Boy Scouts and Venturing crew members. Venturers must have completed either the crew officer training or Venturing Leadership Skills Course.
  • Also beginning in 2010, National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) will also be open to Venturing crew members. Venturers who have not attended an NYLT will be required to attend a bridging training course to prepare them for NAYLE. The syllabus for the bridging course will be available around Jan. 30, 2010.
  • Twenty councils will pilot required training for top leaders in 2010, and all councils will be expected to begin required training in 2011. A Frequently Asked Questions sheet is available on the training Web site that addresses many questions.
  • There is still limited space at the Volunteer Development Training Conference at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base the week of Jan. 18-23, 2010. For additional information, see the promotion flyer on the training Web site page or call 972-580-2211.
  • Check out this month’s Cubcast. Click on the purple icon on this training Web site. This is a terrific resource for Cub Scout leaders.
  • The rank requirements in the new Boy Scout Handbook go into effect on Jan. 1, 2010. A Scout should complete the requirements of the rank he is working on, and when he advances to the next rank he should then begin using the new requirements.
  • A new supplemental training course is now on e-learning: Physical Wellness. Check it out. It is an excellent training experience.
  • Troop Committee Challenge is now available on CD as well as on the Web site. It is catalog No. 36125.
  • The Youth Protection Training CD is also available on the Web site and on a CD. It is catalog No. 36121.
  • Three new supplemental training courses are on the Supplemental Training page. They are How to Conduct a Pinewood Derby, Beginning Cold Weather Camping, and Cooking Without Utensils. Check them out.
  • Cub Scouts 2010 is in development, and the training will be rolled out in March 2010. You can expect a change in program delivery as it will be more achievement- and advancement-driven. Training for Cub Scout leaders will be available both on CD and online.
