SCOUTREACH DIVISION

STEALM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Leadership and Math) SR (Sphero Robots)

The Scoutreach Division of the Chattahoochee Council has partnered with the Columbus Kiwanis Club to increase Scouting and incorporate STEM awareness in youth and offer them the opportunities to "Be Prepared for Life". STEM education is a Meta-discipline because it incorporates technology and engineering into a regular Scouting curriculum.

This effort will increase the awareness in the community and among parents that the Boy Scouts of America is, and always has been, concerned about making a difference in lives.

Our nation is at a crossroads. We live in a tie of great opportunity, when the spirit of innovation can help us overcome challenges and ensure a prosperous and secure future. To seize these opportunities we must position ourselves at the cutting edge of scientific discovery and technological innovation.

STEALM education is an economic imperative. Experts say that technological innovation accounted for almost half of U. S. economic growth over the past 50 years, and almost all of the 30 fastest growing occupations in the next decade will require at least some background in STEALM. The National Science Foundation estimates that 80% of the jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills.

Currently we have STEALM programs at:

Lakewood Elementary, MLK Elementary, Key Elementary, Woodall, Loachopoka Middle School, West Smith Elementary, Central Elementary, East Side Elementary, Five Point Elementary, W. H. O. Elementary.

Exploring is a worksite-based program. It is part of Learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years old.

Exploring's purpose is to provide experiences that help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.

Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate a specific Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop.

There are many Exploring Posts in the Chattahoochee Council that represent a wide variety of career interests.  If you would like to join an Exploring Post in your area, please contact Philip Wright at 706.728.0755 or email philip.wright@scouting.org
